Mark 3:13 is our verse for today: "And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him." This verse is the beginning of the Church!  After a night of prayer on a mountain, the Father revealed to Jesus who should be the Twelve who would leave their worlds and come and follow him.  Notice these truths from this one verse:

1. The choice of the Twelve was made after a night of prayer in an isolated spot, perhaps a spot Jesus regularly chose to pray.  This was an extremely important decision.  These twelve men would form the foundation of his Church.  The ability of the Gospel to touch the world depended on these men.  Therefore, Jesus prayed for God's will.  Before every major decision, Jesus prayed.  Do you?

2. He "called to him" these men.  In John 15 we read that they didn't choose Jesus, he chose them.  Jesus first "called" us.  He first "chose" us.  Jesus began the relationship with us.  Ephesians 1:4 says that before the world was ever created, God chose us in Christ.  Think about the fact that God wanted you to be on Jesus' team.  He first recruited you.  He first chose you.  He first wanted you.  Now try to tell me you are insignificant in God's sight!

3. He called those "whom he desired."  He desired to be with these twelve.  He desires to be with you.  Think about that!  The eternal God of this universe desires to be in relationship with you!  Now try to tell me you are insignificant in God's sight!

4. "They came to him."  After being called and chosen, after knowing Jesus desired them, they came.  We choose Jesus, but only after he chose us.  We come to him, but only after knowing he desires us!  What a wonderful Savior we have who first wants the relationship with us!

We should never feel insignificant or worthless.  We should never feel unloved.  After great prayer and thought, Jesus chose us to be on his team.  He first loved us!  He pursued us in relationship long before we ever pursued him!

What a great friend we have in Jesus.  He will never forsake us.  He will never leave us.  How do we know this?

Because he first chose us.  Because he first loved us.
