Here is a great leadership truth from General George Patton: "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity." He is right. If you've got good people working with you, you don't need to tell them how to do something. Give them a final vision, an ultimate picture of what you want, then set them free. They will surprise you with their ingenuity. They will surprise you with the final result. It will probably be better than you could have ever imagined.
When you tell people how to do something, you are telling them you don't trust them. Good people will produce. Give them space to let their own gifts shine. Then watch them perform. More often than not, they are much sharper than we give them credit!
