Today's verses are John 2:18-22: "So the Jews said to him, 'What sign do you show us for doing these things?' Jesus answered them, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.' The Jews then said, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?' But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken." My child, I was not popular after having cleansed the Temple. The religious authorities demanded that I give them a sign, a symbol, to validate my authority to do these things. They did not understand my answer. My sign would be my resurrection from the dead. The "this temple" to which I was referring was my body. Destroy it, which they would do in three years by placing me on the cross, and it would be restored three days later in resurrection glory.
Note I said "I will raise it up." That was intentional. I would have a part in my resurrection from the dead, as would also my Father and the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:24; Romans 6:4; Ephesians 1:20; Romans 8:11). Later, in this Gospel, I proclaim that I am the resurrection and the life, and that whosoever believes in me will never die (11:25). The one God of the universe, in our perfect, synchronized, unified, choreographed dance of love, committed together to give the world the ultimate sign of our authority over all things: the resurrection. Death cannot conquer love. Our love rules all sin and death.
Later, the disciples knew that I was talking about my resurrection body in this statement. They remembered I had said this. When they remembered it, they believed what I had spoken about eternal, resurrection life that had been promised throughout the Old Testament Scriptures they had been taught as children.
And this same promise if for you, if you simply believe in and trust me today. This world is not all there is. Your earthly body is not all there is. As happened to me, you have a promised, glorious, eternal, flawless, perfect resurrection body awaiting you. It will possess no pain or disease. It will be perfectly conformed to who you are. You will posses it for all eternal. As mine was the first given to restore Eden, so will yours come at the moment of death. One day, you will simply take off your old, aging, wrinkling, flawed earth suit and put on your heavenly one.
It is a day to which you should look forward, one that should fill your heart with hope today. I have mine. You will have yours. This promised, resurrection hope from me should allow you to face anything today with courage and stamina.
Remember: I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone, especially you, who believes in me will never, ever die!
If this is true, and it is, you can trust me today.
