Today's verses are John 3:7,8: "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'  The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.  So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." My child, I don't want anyone to marvel at my teaching: you must be born again.  Yes, the "you" here is plural.  I'm talking to Nicodemus, every member of the Sanhedrin and every person who will ever live.  This is a universal truth.  All must be born again to see the kingdom of heaven.

It is a spiritual rebirth.  Human hearts are conceived with a bent toward self-worship, self-love and self-aggrandizement.  Humans are birthed with an inward bent toward selfishness.  It's the result of the Fall from the Garden of Eden.  At birth, there is no initial inward desire to see and know God's kingdom.  No person is born with a heart of worship toward God and a desire above all else to seek his kingdom first and serve him alone.

That's why the spirit, the heart, the soul, the inner life must experience a new birth, a new life.  The dead, selfish, stoney heart is replaced with an alive, serving, pliable heart.  This person alone knows God's kingdom rule and oversight.

It's entirely the work of the Holy Spirit.  It can't be coerced or claimed by human initiative.  It can't be earned or garnered by works.  As the wind blows wherever it wants to blow without human control, and you hear the rushing sound of the wind as it blows without human control, so the Holy Spirit works in the spiritual rebirth.  It is entirely the work of the sovereign Spirit.  He alone can make a dead heart become alive.  He alone can take a rebellious spirit and bend it toward God.

Do you know this spiritual rebirth today?  As you are physically alive and you know it, so if you are spiritually alive, you should know it.  Ponder these questions: Do you yearn to spend some time with me each day?  Do you love to worship me?  Is it a joy to come together with other believers and exalt my name?  When something wonderful happens to you, do you give me credit?  Is much of your day spent in gratitude?  Do you realize all you have in life, especially the spiritual rebirth, is only because of my grace?  Is your day filled with thanksgiving and praise for what I've done for you?  Do you seek God's will in his kingdom above all else?  Is your heart pliable and ready to obey me with whatever I ask you to do?  Are you generous with the money I've asked you to oversee while on earth?  Do you realize prayer is your lifeline for any hope and stability you desire in the world?

If you've answered "yes" to most all of the above questions, you most certainly have been born again.  Therefore, I am living now inside of you.  Your life is now hidden inside of me.  We are inextricably connected, enjoined in an eternal dance of love.  I am the vine.  You are my branch.  I will sustain you always.

And you can trust me today.
