Ephesians 4 today. Here is the theme: unity in the Body of Christ and a diversity of gifts for those who are in the Body of Christ. Unity amidst diversity. Here are my thoughts today. First, I can’t overstate the importance of unity in the Church of Jesus Christ. As I reflect on Acts 1, before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, it is clearly stated that they were all in “one accord.” They were unified: in Spirit, belief and love. Then and only then did the Holy Spirit come with power. I’m convinced one of the major the Church of Jesus Christ today does not experience the power of God is our disunity: our need to be right, our judgments toward one another, our unforgiveness. I think God wants to pour out his Holy Spirit like He did at Pentecost but He simply can’t because of our disunity. Vs 3: “Always keep yourselves united in the Spirit.”
Second, God gives gifts to the Church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to help build up the Body of Christ (vs 12) SO THAT “we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord.” God’s goal is we be mature, complete, grown-up believers. How long have you been walking with Christ? Has it been several years? If so, are you still in a Christian high chair, demanding someone else feed you? Are you able to feed yourself? Why are you not knowledgeable, mature in Christ?
Emphasizing this unity and maturity for believers, Paul concludes the chapter with some powerful practical application in vss 25-32. I’ll not recap it here. Read them. They are powerful adjurations to all followers of Jesus especially in the areas of anger and forgiveness, something we all need to continue to hear and obey.
Our Lord’s riches blessings upon you all. It’s time for all of us to grow up in the Lord!
