Today's verses are John 5:14-17: "Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, 'See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.' The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this is why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working.'" My child, after the healing, I sought the man whom I had just healed in the temple area. I wanted him to know the one who had healed him. So what if your body is healed? It's only a temporary healing! All who are physically healed will still one day face death. I wanted this man, and all people, to know my name. I wanted him to know my forgiveness of his spiritual sin, the eternal life that only I can offer.
I told him to celebrate the fact that he is well. But I also adjured him to go and sin no more. Some physical suffering is caused by rebellion against me. But not all suffering is because of sin (see John 9:2). Whenever anyone receive a grace gift from me, of any nature or consequence, there should be a shout of thanksgiving and a desire not to sin again. Rightly understood, grace always lead to holy obedience. For him, and you, I don't want any further suffering to come your way! Holy obedience is a part of my grace to you, too!
When the man went to tell the Jewish officials who I was, their desire to persecute me intensified. How foolish their perspective was, especially about the Sabbath! They placed religious tradition above human love and compassion! They totally misunderstood the purpose of my law. It is to love your neighbor as you love yourself (Leviticus 19:18). When I healed this man, I was obeying my law in much greater detail than they were!
I confronted the religious leaders by telling them that my Father is always working, even on the Sabbath, as I am always working. Do you see the close relationship I have with my Father in heaven? Do you see our oneness? Do you see, by stating this relationship and oneness, that I am Lord of the Sabbath? Do you see my extraordinary claim to deity? If my Father created the Sabbath in creation, as a day of rest for all humans, and I am Lord of the Sabbath, then I and my Father are one.
What does all this mean for you today? My child, if I am Lord of the Sabbath, and you've received my forgiveness of my sin and I indwell your heart, then I am Lord of your life. I rule all that is happening to you. I am in control of everything that is occurring in your life.
Therefore, if you've received my grace today, love your neighbor as yourself. Go and sin no more. Live a life that reflects my holiness. Trust me with every area of your life. Nothing that comes to you is surprising me. I'm using it all for you good and my glory. Your eternity is secure. You need worry about nothing.
You can trust me today.
