Today's verses are John 5:31,32: "If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is deemed true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true." My child, in the Old Testament, for truth to be discovered at a trial, there needed to be multiple witnesses to verify what someone was saying (Deuteronomy 17:6;19:15). If I alone am the only one giving witness to the claims that I've just made (that I and the Father are one, that I am God, that I've been given by my Father all authority in heaven and on earth to judge everyone at the resurrection from the dead), then my witness is invalid. There needs to be more than one witness to make my claims valid.
There is another who bears witness to me. Some think it was John the Baptist who, indeed, did bear witness to my identity (John 1:7,8;15,19,32-34;3:26:5:32-36). He pointed to me and said that I was the pure, perfect, unblemished Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. But that is not to whom I am referring here. I am referring to my Father in heaven. It is he who validated me at my baptism and said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." He repeated this blessing at my transfiguration moment. He sent me into this world to save you from your sin. My life on earth is in humble obedience to his command to come and free you from your sin.
Many feel sorrow for me because I was placed on trial unjustly. But the world is actually put on trial by me. I bear witness, by my perfect life, to your great and gross sin. Compared to me, the second Adam, you see what my Father intended all humanity to be. You see how far you've fallen short of that glory! You are guilty in your sin and trespasses. You deserve eternal separation from my Father.
But I also bear witness to my Father's love for you, the depth, width and height of his love! Look at my cross and see the extent to which my Father would go to forgive you of your sin and return you to an intimate relationship with me. Look at the resurrection, how nothing, absolutely nothing, can conquer the Father's love. It's the strongest force in the world. The grave cannot contain it. Love always conquers evil. The evidence is there. It is undeniable!
My child, recognize your guilt and sin. It's the necessary first step to coming to me. Receive my free gift of forgiveness of your sin. It is not received by works, but only by grace through faith. In the reception of this new life, you will know the enormity of my love and presence in your life. Hear me blessedly declare you, "Not guilty!" before my Father. Know the freedom I came to give you, freedom from guilt and condemnation, freedom to love others fully and give your life away, no longer bound by the yoke of your slavery to sin. It is for freedom that I came to set you free!
I love you. I care for you.
You can trust me today.
