I Thessalonians 5 today.  Evidently the Thessalonians had a keen interest and fervent expectation of the immediate return of Jesus.  Sounds like recent events today, doesn’t it?  As Harold Camping boldly prophesied that Jesus would return on May 21st (and was obviously wrong...in the Old Testament, isn’t a false prophet supposed to be stoned?) and now updated it to October 21st (let’s not take him seriously, ok?), here’s what Paul had to say to the Thessalonians (and us) about this subject...and a few others: -Jesus will return like “a thief in the night” (vs 2).  Thieves don’t call ahead and tell us when they are coming!  No one knows the day or the hour, Jesus clearly said so!  If anyone tries to predict the exact time, they are anathema.

-Vs 3: it will probably be in a time when people LEAST expect it, when things are peaceful and secure.

-Vs 4: followers of Jesus, however, will be able to discern the signs of the times and how things are getting closer.  For we belong to the Light, God’s Spirit, moving and teaching us.

-Vs 6ff: therefore, we should stay alert and be sober.  Avoid drunkenness, anything that dulls our senses.  Think clearly.  Put on the armor of God with faith and love around us, especially the helmet of salvation, Jesus’ salvation protecting our thoughts.

-Vs 10ff: he died for our sins, taking God’s wrath deserved for us upon himself!

-Vs 11: “Therefore”...whenever you see a therefore in the Bible know what it’s “there...for...”, if all this about the 2nd Coming is true, “Encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”  Whom have you encouraged today????

Some final thoughts in the final verses (12ff):

-Honor those in authority over you...

-Warn the lazy...

-Encourage the timid...

-Be patient with everyone...

-Don’t pay back evil for evil (it only causes more evil)...

-Always be joyful...

-Persist in prayer...

-Always give thanks...this is God’s will in everything...

-Test all prophecy (Harold Camping!!!)...

-Keep away from EVERY kind of evil...

-Let your body, soul and spirit (there are three parts to our lives) ALL be kept holy and blameless until that great day when Jesus returns.

-Keep on praying for those who labor in ministry.  WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS!!!

-And may God’s grace be with you all today and forever!!
