Today's verses are John 8:7-9: "And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.' And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, whey went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him." My child, how wicked and arrogant is the human heart! These Pharisees, trying to find a way to charge me with blasphemy, kept badgering me regarding the Law of Moses and whether this woman, caught in the act of adultery, should be stoned to death. They were relentless. They wouldn't give up. They persistently tried to trap me.
Finally, I said that the person who had never sinned should throw the first stone. The people arrogantly clutched the stones in their hands, ready to throw them at the woman. And I continued to write in the sand. I continued to write the sins of the Pharisees and all others ready to throw the stones: their pride, arrogance, judgmentalism, self-righteousness.
Then the Holy Spirit began to work on the hearts of all those gathered. He began to convict each one of their own sins. The crowd began dropping their stones they were clutching, ready to hurl at the defenseless, quivering woman. Interestingly, it was the older people who first dropped their stones. This is how it should be. The older people should be more in tune with their wicked, selfish hearts. The longer people live, the more opportunities they've had to see their motivations in life to be self-serving, self-aggrandizing, self-promotional. They've had more opportunities to see how selfish and wicked their human hearts really are.
My child, people love me in direct proportion to how great a sinner they know themselves to be. If you only think you've sinned a little bit, you only love me a little bit. If you know you're a great sinner against my Father in heaven, you love me a great deal.
Today open wide your heart to the Holy Spirit. Let him prick your heart of your pride. Let him break you of your arrogance. Let him convict your soul of your own self-righteousness. Let him reveal to you how far you've fallen short of my Father's intention for your life. Let him humble you before the perfect love of my Father in heaven.
Blessed are those who are poor in spirit and barren of soul. They alone know my kingdom and all its mercies. Blessed are those who mourn and grieve over the sinful condition of their heart. They alone receive the comfort of my forgiveness and grace. Blessed are the broken, for they alone know the fulness of my love.
My child, are you broken today? Have you come to grips with the depth of your sin and rebellion against me? Do you know how arrogant and prideful your heart really is? Good! Now you are ready to receive all my grace, mercy, love and kindness. Now you can know the depth of my forgiveness. It's the necessary first step to come to me.
You can trust me today.
