Today's verses are John 10:34-36: "Jesus answered them, 'Is it not written in your Law, 'I said, you are gods'?  If he called them gods to whom the word of God came--and Scripture cannot be broken--do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God?'" My child, my listeners are ready to stone me for my claims to deity.  They accused me of committing blasphemy.  Stoning was the natural consequence of this crime, according to Mosaic law.

In my response, I took them to the psalms.  I quoted Psalm 82:2-4, where judges, God's representatives on earth for his justice to be seen, are called "gods".  My question to them is this one: If earthly judges can be referred to as "gods" in this psalm, isn't it even more appropriate for the one who is truly God's Son to receive this title?"

With this argument, I took one word, "gods", to show how the Scripture, God's immutable Word, "cannot be broken".  What I was saying is that every single word in Scripture is completely true and perfectly reliable.  My opponents held this high view of God's Word, as they should.  Therefore, I wanted to make my point to people who held a high view of Scripture.

Then I gave them, and you, an insight into a heavenly reality.  In heaven, before my incarnation, my Father in heaven consecrated me.  In the same way a prophet, a priest, or a king would be consecrated to their earthly office of oversight, I was consecrated by my Father in heaven to the position of Savior of the world.  Before all the angels of heaven, I was consecrated to the mission to which my Father sent me.  After this consecration, I took on human flesh and entered the womb of a virgin named Mary.  I was birthed in a stable in Bethlehem.

I lived the perfect, righteous life you could never live.  I died on the cross, taking all your sins upon myself.  My Father in heaven poured out his wrath on me, that I didn't deserve, and gave you my perfect righteousness, something you don't deserve, by grace through faith.  On the cross, I received the abandonment that you deserved, so that you could possess the eternal presence of my Father, something you don't deserve.

I was raised from the dead to prove this act of love to be true.  Love always conquers sin and death.  I ascended to heaven, returning to my heavenly home, my mission complete.

All this was done for one sole, primary reason: love.  It was done because my Father in heaven loves you very much.  How great is the Father's love for you!  This is the evidence of true love.

This love, given to you by the Holy Spirit, will daily strengthen your inner being.  You will always know, with all my children throughout the world, the breadth and length and height and depth of my love for you, a love that surpasses all mere human knowledge.  How I desire that you daily and always be filled with the fullness of my Father in heaven!

That's why I was consecrated.  That's why I was sent to you.

You can trust me today.
