Today's verse are John 12:12-15: "The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!' And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!'" My child, the next day, Sunday, as I face the cross on Friday, I decided to enter Jerusalem. I was preparing to experience the Passover with my disciples on Thursday.
The large crowd that had come to Jerusalem for the Passover feast heard that I was coming into the Holy City. They took palm branches and started waving them to greet me. Symbolically (and sadly) the waving of palm branches indicated a military victory over one's enemy in that day.
The people were convinced I would bring them national independence from Rome's tyranny. The crowd understood me being "the King of Israel" in a military sense, even as they quoted Psalm 118:25,26. The term "Hosanna" means "Save us." They wanted to me to save them from Roman rule.
In Christian tradition, this day is called "Palm Sunday."
I found and mounted a young donkey as I entered the city. This fulfilled in specificity the prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9, as my friend John notes in these verses. This verse from Zechariah depicts a humble shepherd-king. With the fulfillment of this prophecy, I was trying to express that my kingdom was not of this world. My kingdom was a spiritual kingdom of humility, not pride, that began with conquering the selfish, sinful human heart by the power of grace and forgiveness.
My child, for me the most important two words in this section of John's gospels are the words, "Fear not." How often they are spoken in my Word. Someone estimated "Fear not" is said hundreds of times, perhaps enough for each day of the year! It's in my Word so often because I want you to overcome the power of fear in your life.
Fear is the antithesis of faith. Faith is the only thing that pleases my Father in heaven. Faith cannot operate if fear exists. Faith is the way to conquer fear. When fear knocks, you should send faith to answer the door. When you do, you'll discover is gone.
Faith believes that my Father in heaven is in control of everything in the world. Faith believes that every atom is in my Father's sovereign hand. Faith trusts that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Faith believes that all things are working together for your good and my Father's glory for all those who trust in me. Faith isn't anxious about anything, but in everything, with thanksgiving, makes your requests known to my Father in heaven. Faith brings perfect peace to your hearts because it trusts my Father in heaven when you pray.
My child, fear not! Don't allow one ounce of fear to enter your heart today. Eradicate it like you would any other evil in your life by believing in my Father, by believing in me!
You can trust me today.
