Revelation 5 today. It begins with a scroll in the right hand of God the Father. In this scroll are the names of everyone who has ever lived. In vs 2, an angel cries out, "Who is worthy to break the seals on the scroll and unroll it?" But no one anywhere, in heaven or on earth, was worthy to break the seal. John wept because no one could be found (vs 4). But one of the 24 elders told John to stop weeping because the Lion of the tribe of Judah, Jesus, had conquered sin and death. "He is worthy to open the scroll and break its seven seals" (vs 5).
In vss 6ff, Jesus steps forward and takes the scroll from the right hand of the Father on the throne. When he took the scroll, the 24 elders all had a harp and a gold bowl filled with the prayers of the saints (all our prayers have been gathered before the Father in heaven), and all began to sing a "new song" about the worthiness of Jesus to break the seal of the scroll where all our names are written. Please read the song in vss 9, 10. It gives us a hint of the kind of songs the Father wants us to sing before him.
Please note vs 10 in the song. It's about you and me. God's will from the beginning of creation is that we would become a kingdom of priests. We were made to be different from the world. We were intended to mediate grace to this dying world. Our prayers were to make constant intercession before the Father for the lost and hurting in the world. Finally, we were made to reign on earth! We were created to have dominion over this world, not the evil one.
In vs 11 the angels, millions of angels join the singing! Around the throne they join the elders and living beings continuing the praise of the Lamb of God who is worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessings (vs 12).
Then in vs 13 every creature in heaven and earth join the chorus and sing: "Blessings and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever." Note they all worship the Father and the Son thru the seven-fold Spirit, all worthy of worship, the Triune God, three in one.
The four living beings said, "Amen!" (vs 14). And the 24 elders continued their worship.
Jesus broke the seal of God's scroll with our name on it! He is worthy to be praised. Born in the tribe of Judah, fulfilling the prophecy of Jacob in Genesis 49 hundreds of years earlier. He rules over all the universe today and forever. Let us all take our calling as his priests today, living a different life, interceding for people everywhere, desiring them to worship the One who is worthy, Jesus our Lord.
